2024 has been an amazing year for Ghost Pipes (Monotropa uniflora) - I've seen hundreds! They are not fungi, but rather parasitic mycoheterotrophs, meaning they forego producing chlorophyll and instead mooch off of fungal networks. They are selective moochers, as they seem to only parasitize fungi in the Russulaceae family such as Russula and Lactarius. In a way, they are stealing nutrients from the trees (oak, pine, etc.) that form mutualistic relationships with the fungi.
