Xylaria are the most interesting fungi to photograph by far. They guttate droplets, grow in every shape from clublike to antlers, grow alone or congregated, and look different depending on whether their white spores have already dispersed. We have many species in the midwest, though they are not well categorized yet, and I'm not even sure what the range of morphological variability between them is. Either way, easily one of the most alien of fungi.
